My Top 25 Classified Ads Sites for June 08

I decided it was time to gauge the classified ads world again. There have been some shifts, but one constant remains, craigslist is still outclassing their nearest competitors.

It reminded me of the 36 second fight tonight: Fedor Emelianenko (28-1, 1 no contest) def. Tim Sylvia (24-5). The former is by far the best in his class.

Anyways, here is the list of free ads sites. (Some charge for premium services)

I am a big fan of lists in general. I found this list on compete.com. It shows the top 25 websites on the Internet. As you can see, the highly ranked classified ads website, craigslist, is number 14 overall. Google finally overtook Yahoo in terms of people count.

How many free ads can I post to your site in one day?

Here is a great question from one of our posters via email. It is about posting multiple/duplicate classified ads. The policy about the aforementioned is also listed in FreeAdLists’ Terms of Use . But does anyone ever bother reading those texts? I seriously doubt it, so here is a pithy response to that question.

I posted around 12-14 ads on your site this morning. I go to manage my ads and only 7 or so show up! How many ads can I post to your site in one day? Is there a limit? Please let me know. Thanks, FreeAdLists_Poster

FreeAdLists_Poster,

We are very strict with regards to duplicate ads and ads that have the same link in them time and time again. If you have different ads then you can post as many as you would like. If we feel that someone is bogging down the web site with twenty versions of the same ad or link, then they will be deleted, per our discretion.

Respectfully,

Debra

My Top 25 Classified Ads Websites

Here are my top twenty-five classified ads websites. The last time I did a survey was in Mar 2008. It appears the traffic for some of the sites have increased substantially. Of course, craigslist still leads the list by a phenomenal margin. Speaking of phenomenal margin, did anyone watch Game 6 of Celtics vs Lakers? 131-92 - Ouch!

How can I get a nationwide Ad listing for the US AND CANADA?

Some_FreeAdLists_Poster,

We used to offer Feature Ads/All Cities options but the spammers were killing the service. They would list their ad and then try to charge someone else’s paypal account. We got sick and tired of dealing with these low-life scum and the costly chargebacks associated with their “transactions,” so we disabled the options.

But we could do this on a case by case basis. We do have people (like you) who contact us personally and truly want to set something up.

“Featured Ads” option is $3 (will show up first in the category/and featured in the slow moving marquee) and “All Cities” is $3 (will show up for every city within a given state). And then there are static ads. They are listed in the “Classified Ads” (homepage) section and they run $5 for two weeks.

By the way, FreeAdLists.com is not interested in ads that are illegal, sexist, pornographic, gambling, home typing scams, mp3/movie downloads, pharmacy or racist in content.

Regards,

Roy

I want to buy your domain name - NOT!

The 419 scammers are employing yet another method to bilk you out of your hard earned cash. As you can see below, they claim to be interested in buying your domain and they have cash today. Yeah, right. The only cash they will have is yours, if you let them. I have received several of these so-call “buy your domain offers” the past two days.

Notice they are asking potential sellers/victims for phone numbers. Do not give out your phone number unless you want to be taken. Frankly speaking, that should be common sense for most of us.

They have spoofed a legitimate/professional looking email address to get your attention. But as you will quickly find out, the reply email is a cryptic Gmail email address. That is a surefire mark of a scam.

Below is a quick search of the email address on Google.com: Purchase Domain 419 Scam

Beware of Cashier’s Check Scams - Always deal in person

Yesterday, I received this message from an alert seller who refused to be scammed. Here is her story.

“Email sent by: A smart seller who can be contacted at: c_____AT hotmail.com

After posting an ad on this site, I was promptly contacted by “an interested buyer” who said he wanted to buy my RV with a cashiers check made out for $1400 above the asking price. He said this was to pay the moving company that would pick up the RV. After telling him I would not accept a cashier’s check for anything other than the exact asking price, he stopped emailing me and would not respond. He also offered me $50 extra to immediately remove my ad (which I did for free). His name is Kelvin Smith, email kelvinstore?? AT hotmail.com I would appreciate it if you would notify your advertisers in some way of this scam. If you have any questions or want copies of his emails to me please contact me.”

We can all learn from her message. By the way, all classified ads websites are fighting these scams but the most effective defense is to educate yourself on cashier’s check scams and use common sense. If the deal sounds too good to be TRUE, IT IS. There is a lot of information available online on this topic, and you should be able to reasonably identify when someone is trying to scam you.

Here is how these low-life scammers work this OVERPAYMENT cashier check’s scam:

The seller (YOU) is selling something of value on the Internet.

The “buyer” aka scammer sends emails that he/she wants to buy the item. The scammer agrees to pay with a cashier’s check or corporate check from a U.S. bank.

The buyer sends a cashier check for much more than the price of the item. The seller (YOU) will normally ask why there is a difference. These low life scammers will makeup some believable story and then ask YOU to deposit the check and return the difference via wire transfer.

The seller thinks the check is good because the bank cashed it. But shortly after the transaction, the bank determines the check is a counterfeit.

Unfortunately, YOU have wired the money to the scammer and by now YOU find out it was a SCAM. Oh crap! If the transaction was done overseas, especially to countries without extradition treaties with US, the money is unrecoverable.

The worst part of the deal, the bank is now demanding that YOU make good on the counterfeit check!!

REMEMBER: Never deal with a “distant person” who asks you to wire money or accept cashier checks. Always deal in person. Never wire money or accept checks from anyone you do not know.

Math Helps Reduce Spam Submissions

For FreeAdLists.com top list, I have significantly reduced my daily spam queue by asking a “more difficult” math question. For example, what is 2^3? It’s 8.  If you didn’t know the answer to that question, you were probably a spam-bot or even worse - an elementary level splogger.

I also added the following verbiage to help alleviate the spam wave: No illegal/hate, Rapidshare, Warez, Movies, Music, Wallpaper/only photos, Splog, or Porn links. Don’t spam with the same topic (eg. autos, celebrity, made for adultfinder). Your blog MUST have 10 or more posts to be considered for inclusion.

I seriously doubt the second part (verbiage) has helped reduce spam, but I’m fairly certain the math portion has had some impact.

Wallstreet Meets Beauty Queen via Craigslist

One of my co-workers emailed this post to me. It is a classic of craigslist.org’s “best of” category. I assume the author of the post could have probably gotten a job writing funnies because her post was hilarious. But I presume she was trying to avoid the working bit.

Here’s the craigslist post:

What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I’m tired of beating around the bush. I’m a beautiful (spectacularly beautiful) 25 year old girl. I’m articulate and classy. I’m not from New York. I’m looking to get married to a guy who makes at least half a million a year. I know how that sounds, but keep in mind that a million a year is middle class in New York City, so I don’t think I’m overreaching at all.

Are there any guys who make 500K or more on this board? Any wives? Could you send me some tips? I dated a business man who makes average around 200 - 250. But that’s where I seem to hit a roadblock. 250,000 won’t get me to central park west. I know a woman in my yoga class who was married to an investment banker and lives in Tribeca, and she’s not as pretty as I am, nor is she a great genius. So what is she doing right? How do I get to her level?

Here are my questions specifically:

- Where do you single rich men hang out? Give me specifics- bars, restaurants, gyms

-What are you looking for in a mate? Be honest guys, you won’t hurt my feelings

-Is there an age range I should be targeting (I’m 25)?

- Why are some of the women living lavish lifestyles on the upper east side so plain? I’ve seen really ‘plain jane’ boring types who have nothing to offer married to incredibly wealthy guys. I’ve seen drop dead gorgeous girls in singles bars in the east village. What’s the story there?

- Jobs I should look out for? Everyone knows - lawyer, investment banker, doctor. How much do those guys really make? And where do they hang out? Where do the hedge fund guys hang out?

- How you decide marriage vs. just a girlfriend? I am looking for MARRIAGE ONLY

Please hold your insults - I’m putting myself out there in an honest way. Most beautiful women are superficial; at least I’m being up front about it. I wouldn’t be searching for these kind of guys if I wasn’t able to match them - in looks, culture, sophistication, and keeping a nice home and hearth.

Here is the response to her post:

Dear Pers-431649184:

I read your posting with great interest and have thought meaningfully about your dilemma. I offer the following analysis of your predicament. Firstly, I’m not wasting your time, I qualify as a guy who fits your bill; that is I make more than $500K per year. That said here’s how I see it.

Your offer, from the prospective of a guy like me, is plain and simple a crappy business deal. Here’s why. Cutting through all the B.S., what you suggest is a simple trade: you bring your looks to the party and I bring my money. Fine, simple. But here’s the rub, your looks will fade and my money will likely continue into perpetuity…in fact, it is very likely that my income increases but it is an absolute certainty that you won’t be getting any more beautiful!

So, in economic terms you are a depreciating asset and I am an earning asset. Not only are you a depreciating asset, your depreciation accelerates! Let me explain, you’re 25 now and will likely stay pretty hot for the next 5 years, but less so each year. Then the fade begins in earnest. By 35 stick a fork in you!

So in Wall Street terms, we would call you a trading position, not a buy and hold…hence the rub…marriage. It doesn’t make good business sense to “buy you” (which is what you’re asking) so I’d rather lease. In case you think I’m being cruel, I would say the following. If my money were to go away, so would you, so when your beauty fades I need an out. It’s as simple as that. So a deal that makes sense is dating, not marriage.

Separately, I was taught early in my career about efficient markets. So, I wonder why a girl as “articulate, classy and spectacularly beautiful” as you has been unable to find your sugar daddy. I find it hard to believe that if you are as gorgeous as you say you are that the $500K hasn’t found you, if not only for a tryout.

By the way, you could always find a way to make your own money and then we wouldn’t need to have this difficult conversation.

With all that said, I must say you’re going about it the right way. Classic “pump and dump.” I hope this is helpful, and if you want to enter into some sort of lease, let me know.

Post your LEGITIMATE classified ad on FreeAdLists.com

After responding to some comments on another one of my blogs, I started thinking about offering FREE Featured Ads (homepage marquee) to anyone who links back to FreeAdLists.com on their website or blog (preferable homepage). Your classified ad will be seen on the marquee for 7 days. If I receive numerous requests, I will do the features in batches. Don’t ask me to feature obvious spam/scam ads, such as stuffing envelopes, copy/pasting ads, typing at home, making money online, get rich scams, pets, pharmacy, pyramid, porn/adult, or any other shady ad.

Here is what I am proposing:
1. Post your LEGITIMATE classified ad on FreeAdLists
2. Post a comment to the blog as to where the ad is located on FreeAdLists.com and where the linkback is located (your blog/website - prefer homepage).
3. Your classified ad will be seen in the marquee for 7 days.
4. Questions?
